Before beginning work for the Stennis Institute of Government, Joe Young retired in May of 2011 from the office of Tax Assessor/Collector of Pike County, Mississippi where he served for almost 28 years. He graduated as valedictorian of his class at North Pike High School and was selected All-State in football. Mr. Young received his AA degree from Southwest Community College where he was elected student body treasure and chosen All-State and All-Star in football. Recently he was honored by Southwest Community college by being inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.

He holds a B.S. degree in mathematics from Mississippi College where he served as co-captain of the football team and was selected by the faculty to receive the Farr Scholarship. After college, he was a teacher and coach in public schools for six years before being elected to office.

Mr. Young has achieved numerous educational levels in the assessing field. He has achieved the Assessment Evaluator I & II levels and holds the Mississippi Assessment Evaluator designation. He also holds a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser license which he has put on inactive status since he retired. He has served as President of the Mississippi Tax Assessors/Collectors Association and President of the state chapter of the International Association of Assessing Officers. In the year 1994 he was selected by his colleagues as Assessor of the Year. In 1999 he was named the member of the year by the International Association of Assessing Officers which is an organization that has almost 10,000 members worldwide.

Shortly after retirement from the assessor’s office Mr. Young was given the first “Life Achievement Award” by the state chapter of the International Association of Assessing Officers. He frequently testifies before the Mississippi Legislature on subjects related to tax assessing and collecting.

Mr. Young has been happily married to the former Ramona Alford since 1976. They have 3 sons and daughters-in-law and 5 grandchildren. He enjoys playing golf, hunting, fishing, and singing gospel music.
