2013 YourTown application and information available (2013-03-15)
YourTown, Mississippi is an interactive workshop that focuses on community development using basic design and planning principles. Using maps, markers, pens, and tracing paper participants will produce designs and future plans for a ficticious Mississippi city called “Your Town.” Planning professionals lead teams of participants through exercises that address common small town issues such as the impact of a proposed bypass, the identification of potential tourism opportunities, the revitalization of a struggling downtown, and other typical small town challenges.
Space is limited to 36 participants and applications will be accepted through April 24, 2013 or until the workshop reaches capacity. For more information or to download the agenda and application, visit the 2013 YourTown page.
2013 SEDI application now available (2013-03-06)
The application for the 2013 State Executive Development Institute is now available. Held on the campus of Mississippi State University, SEDI brings many of the unique resources found on the university campus to the program. Mississippi State Personnel Board Certified Public Manager Program and participants may also receive three graduate-level hours in Public Policy Administration at Mississippi State University upon completion of the program.
A maximum of 30 participants are chosen to attend SEDI each year, based on applicants’ professional experience and responsibilities. Priority is given to Mississippi’s senior state and local officials.
Stennis Staff Member and Doctoral candidate get article accepted into journal (2013-02-04)
Luke Fowler and Joseph "Dallas" Breen (Senior Research Associate with the Stennis Institute), both doctoral candidates in the department, recently received word that their article, "The Impact of State Political Factors on Renewable Portfolio Standard Adoption", was accepted into The Electricity Journal. The paper explores the influence of political culture in the adoption of state-level policies to institutionalize renewable energy. The Electricity Journal is the leading journal of the U.S. electric power industry, designed for those who are interested in the emerging issues of electric power in all sectors. The manuscript is scheduled to appear in the March edition of the journal.

Education Policy Fellowship Program(EPFP)
EPFP is a professional development program that provides emerging leaders in education and related fields with the knowledge and networks to advance the core issues of education policy. This program is a critical resource for individuals, organizations, and the state to increase knowledge about education policy and linkages between policy and practice. EPFP's mission is to develop leaders in public and private organiation who have the capacity to create and implement sound public policy to improve outcomes for children and youth.
Over a nine month commitment, Fellows concentrate on three program strands: public policy, leadership, and professional networking. Fellows will remain in the their full-time positions and use their work environment as the context for examining important leadership and policy issues in Mississippi.

Mississippi Community Action Project
The Stennis Institute was awarded a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to conduct a two year pilot program to provide training to communities to increase their participation and success in the planning, decision-making, and leadership processes. This program will incorporate components of First Impressions, YourTown, Mississippi and Selected to Serve programs. The marketing, recruitment and selection of participating communities will begin soon. read more
